Arlington Heights Blotter: Man Threatens Landscapers with Sword, Officer Assaulted

Criminal Damage to Property

Eggs were thrown at a home in the 1300 block of N. Illinois Ave. sometime between June 27 at midnight and June 28 at 6:10 a.m. Approximately $2,000 in damage was caused to the Trex flooring on the front porch of the home.

A copper coolant line to the central air conditioning system was punctured at a home in the 600 block of E. Oakton, sometime between August 31, 2012 and June 27, 2013. The homeowner said the damage caused all the coolant to leak out on the east side of the property. An estimated $600 in damage was caused.

Theft

Two bicycles were stolen from the Metra Train Station, 45 W. Northwest Hwy.

  • The first theft occurred on June 27 between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. A witness told police he saw two subjects, one who appeared to be cutting the lock for a blue Schwinn men’s bicycle ($180) and then saw the bike loaded into a white work van. After reviewing surveillance video, police describe the two suspects as black males, both standing between five foot seven inches and six feet tall. One man was wearing a white t-shirt and plaid shorts, the other was wearing tan pants, a red t-shirt and a red and tan baseball hat.
  • The second bicycle, a Schwinn men’s 27-inch road bike ($250) was stolen on June 27 between 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The bike was secured to a bike rack, but there were no  witnesses to the theft, or surveillance video available.

Three credit cards were stolen from a woman’s purse while she was at a wine tasting at Coopers Hawk Winery, 798 W. Algonquin Rd. on June 28 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.  The victim told police she had her purse hanging near where she was seated when she believes the credit cards were taken. Fraudulent charges, including more than $2,000 at Nordstrom in Woodfield Mall, more than $1,000 at Carson Pirie Scott in Streets of Woodfield, and $450 at Target Store in Hillside for $450 were made on the cards. The charges at Target were declined by the victim's bank.

Two bicycles were stolen from Dick’s Sporting Goods, 401 E. Palatine Rd.

  • The first theft occurred on June 27 between 2 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. The blue Trek 21-speed mountain bike ($200) was parked in front of the store, unsecured, and was gone when the victim exited the store.
  • The second theft occurred on June 30 between 2 p.m. and 2:29 p.m. The blue Trek adult-sized mountain bike ($500) was parked in front of the store, unsecured, and was gone when the victim exited the store.

Vehicle Burglary

A silver 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe was burglarized while it was parked in the State Farm Insurance business parking lot, 928 W. Algonquin Rd., on June 28 between 9:25 a.m. and 11 a.m. The windows were left open, and $150 in cash was removed from a purse sitting on the front passenger seat.

A white 2013 Lincoln MKX was burglarized while it was parked at the Northwest Community Hospital Wellness Center parking lot, 900 W. Central Rd. on June 28 between 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.  The victim said he couldn’t find his key fob for his car when he finished his workout, and believes it may have fallen out of his pocket while he was in the wellness center. He  discovered that $2,800 from a black leather wallet left in the vehicle’s glove box was stolen.

Motor Vehicle Theft

A silver 2003 Chevy Silverado extended cab pick-up truck was stolen from an apartment parking lot in the 600 block of W. Rand Rd. sometime between June 28 at 10 p.m. and June 29 at 11 a.m. The truck was parked in the rear of the apartment building, and there were no signs of forced entry. The victim checked with the towing service with negative results.

Residential Burglary

A home in the 1600 block of W. Olive St. was burglarized on June 29 between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. When the family came home, they found items thrown throughout the house. The freezer door was wide open and a window in the master bedroom that was left unlocked also was opened, and the screen knocked out. An Acer desktop computer valued at $1,800 was missing from a desk in the master bedroom, along with a glass jewelry box that contained mostly costume jewelry, along with a pair of yellow gold hoop earrings and two yellow gold rings valued at $1,300. 

Aggravated Assault

Police responded to an assault in progress in the 1600 block of W. Surrey Park Ln. in an apartment common area on on June 29 at 8:47 a.m. Arrested was Piotr B. Holobud, a 45-year-old male, of the 1300 block of S. New Wilke Rd. Police say Holobud threatened four landscapers with a Samurai-style sword, by raising it in a threatening manner toward them, as they were working. The landscapers left the area and when police arrived, Holobud’s wife opened their garage and police were able to take possession of the sword. Holobud was charged with four charges of aggravated assault, and four charges of unlawful use of a weapon. His court date is scheduled for July 19.

Battery

A police officer on patrol encountered three subjects drinking alcohol at the Marathon Gas Station, 102 W. Northwest Hwy. on June 28 between 3:58 p.m. and 4:19 p.m. Arrested was Jennifer R. Weissmann, a 38-year-old female of the 1100 block of Marshall Dr., Des Plaines. When the officer arrived, two of the subjects fled on foot. Weissman was the third subject, and remained at the scene. She began cursing at the officer and threatening to shoot him. When she started walking toward an open duffle bag, the officer told her to stop. She declined, and instead ran and tried to get away on a bicycle. The officer took off on foot, and caught her.  Weissmann proceeded to resist, then kicked and elbowed the officer. She was warned by the office that she would be pepper sprayed, and when she continued, the officer spayed her. She was taken into custody, and charged with one count of battery and one count of resisting a peace officer. Weissmann attended a bond hearing, but a court date was not immediately available.

Driving Under the Influence

Juan Ortiz, a 36-year-old male, of the 2200 block of Birch Ln., Rolling Meadows was charged with DUI on June 29 at 12:09 a.m. during a roadside safety check near Guitar Center, 2375 S. Arlington Heights Rd. While driving a 1993 Toyota Previa van, Ortiz entered the roadside safety check point and failed to stop at two stop signs. When he was stopped by officers, there was a smell of alcohol on his breath, in addition to him having bloodshot eyes. When police conducted a vehicle inventory, they found four open cans of Miller High Life beer, and a cold half-full Miller High Life can of beer under a shirt on the passenger seat of the vehicle. Otiz also was charged with aggravated DUI for not having a valid driver’s license and having no insurance, as well as illegal transportation of alcohol.
