Local Man Needs Your Vote

Steve Herbst was paralyzed after a tragic accident occurred while he was playing football for Palatine High School in 1980. Now he is in the running to win a mobility van to help with his needs, and he needs the local community to help him win.

While attending Palatine High School in 1980, lifelong Palatine resident Steve Herbst suffered a catastrophic injury which severed his spinal cord, causing him to become a quadriplegic before he even graduated high school.  Since the middle of March 2013, Herbst has been in the running to win a new mobility van in a contest sponsored by the National Mobility Equipment Dealer's Assocation (NMEDA). And he needs your help every day for the next 15 days to get there.  Herbst is currently within the top 10 percent of vote getters out of more than 1,100 people who have entered the contest. John Hersey's Annie Johnson to Compete in State Gymnastics Meet

The state meet will be held Feb. 15 and 16 at Palatine High School.

Follow Arlington Heights Patch on Facebook — Sign up for Arlington Heights Patch breaking news alerts and daily e-mail updates John Hersey High School junior Annie Johnson is headed to the state gymnastics meet this weekend.  Johnson will compete in the uneven parallel bars after qualifying at the Fremd High School sectional on Feb. 4. She had a qualifying score of 9.250, according to the Illinois High School Association website.  The state meet will be held Feb. 15 and 16 at Palatine High School.  Other local girls who qualified for the state meet include:  Congratulate the area girls who will be heading to state this weekend and wish them good luck in our comments’ section below.

Principal: Gun Threat at Palatine High School Not Credible

PHS Principal Gary Steiger said chatter on social media sites about someone bringing a gun to school Friday was only rumor; police presence was increased Thursday and will be Friday as well.

After chatter was discovered on Twitter and other social media sites regarding students bringing a gun at Palatine High School Friday, Principal Gary Steiger sent out a statement to parents Thursday categorizing the threats as “non-credible.”  “We investigated and determined that the reports repeated portions of an overheard conversation where words and statements were taken out of context between two people talking to each other in the media center,” Steiger said in the statement. Steiger went on to explain that many times after tragedies such as the deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School just a week ago, in addition to the “hype” surrounding the Mayan calendar and predicted end of the world Friday, similar rumors are not …

UPDATED: Palatine Native Found Dead at NIU

David R. Bogenberger, 19, was a 2012 Palatine High School graduate and was found dead in his off campus fraternity house early this morning.

Palatine native David R. Bogenberger, 19, was pronounced dead on Friday, November 2 after being found unresponsive in his off-campus fraternity house at Northern Illinois University, according to DeKalb police. An emergency call came in at 10:14 a.m. stating Bogenberger was found unresponsive at the Pi Kappy Alpha fraternity. DeKalb Fire Department paramedics were unable to resuscitate him, and he was pronounced dead by the DeKalb County Coroner at 10:45 a.m.  Northern Illinois University posted a statement on their website Friday from from NIU President John G. Pellet Guns Spur Lockdown at Palatine Schools

The two-hour soft lockdown was lifted at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Three Palatine schools, Palatine High School and Virginia Lake and Jane Addams Elementary were in a “soft lockdown” for close to two hours after a nearby resident spotted a group of teens playing with what looked to be a handgun late Wednesday morning. A resident of the 1500 block of Winslowe Drive reported five teenage boys were playing with what appeared to be a handgun around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday. According to police, the caller said she saw the teenagers pulling the trigger and she could hear a “clicking” sound. Police later found out the "gun" was actually a pellet gun and not a firearm. “We notified the school immediately,” said Palatine Police Cmdr. Eight Chemical Bombs Found in Palatine

The Cook County Bomb squad disarmed several chemical bombs found at the Randville Condominiums, less than one mile from Palatine High School.

OUTSIDE CHICAGO -- The local bomb squad disarmed and removed eight chemical bombs from a courtyard at a condominium development Sunday, police said. According to the Palatine Police Department, filled with bleach, the eight “Macgyver type bombs,” or homemade chemical bombs were found around the courtyard behind the Randville Condominiums in Palatine at 1116 E. Randville Drive, less than one mile from Palatine High School. A nearby resident spotted one of the devices and called 911 Sunday about 1:15 p.m. Deputy Fire Chief William Gabrenya said firefighters from a distance were able to confirm the presence of several devices in the courtyard of Randville Condominiums and verified the potential hazard of the chemical bombs.  Gabrenya said …

Hersey Huskies Go on the Road To Face Palatine

The John Hersey Huskies will play their first away game against tonight against the Palatine Pirates.

Friday night football continues tonight, as the Hersey Huskies (1-2) try to bounce back from their lost last week.  The Huskies will be on different terrain this evening when they play the Palatine Pirates (2-1) in their stadium. The Pirates are coming off a big win against Elk Grove, with key performances from both sides of the ball.  After last week's lost, Huskies head coach Dragan Teonic said he planned to prepare the same for tonight's game.  "I don’t think there’s anything different," he said Friday, Sept. 8.
