Congresswoman Duckworth’s Statement on Extension of Benefits to Same-Sex Spouses of Military Personnel

Washington, D.C. – On September 3, same-sex spouses of members of the military became eligible for the same health care, housing and other benefits enjoyed by opposite-sex spouses. Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) released the following statement in response to the change in policy:

“I am encouraged by Secretary Hagel’s decision to grant same-sex spouses of military members equal benefits. All Americans deserve the opportunity to protect their partner and this policy allows our men and women in uniform to access the benefits they earned. It is now imperative that all states grant their citizens the right to marry so that partners of those who serve in the military can receive benefits they deserve. When our troops serve this nation, their families also sacrifice.”

“As a member of the House Armed Services committee, I look forward to solidifying the rights of military same-sex spouses in the legislative process and providing full equality for all those who serve our country.”
