WASHINGTON, D.C. – Four years ago today,the enactment of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act restored a woman’s ability to fight unfair pay. Lilly Ledbetter sued the company she worked with for nearly 20 years after learning that she was earning less than her male counterparts. Ledbetter filed a charge as soon as she became aware of the wrongdoing, but theSupreme Court said that she had waited too long to sue for pay discrimination. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which was signed into law by President Obama in 2009, clarified that an individual had 180 days to file a claim after any discriminatory paycheck.
“Every individual in our country deserves equal pay for equal work. The Lilly Ledbetter Act protects millions of women who have been pushing against the glass ceiling for decades,” said Duckworth. “The fact that women only make $.77 on the dollar not only hurts women, but working families trying to make ends meet. Today is a day to celebrate the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and a reminder to recommit ourselves to ending the pay gap for women.”
