Congresswoman Duckworth Gives Floor Speech Calling on Congress to Avoid Sequester

Mr. Speaker,

At Harper College, school superintendents told me that sequestration will cut vital
programs and jeopardize the future of our children.

In Hanover Park, I listened to officials discussing desperately needed transportation Investments. With sequestration, we will lose both construction jobs and potential new investments in our business parks.

In Itasca, Veterans who would sacrifice everything for our nation, wonder why Congress can’t come together to stop cuts that will hurt our country. They didn’t go home until they got their mission accomplished and we shouldn’t go home until we resolve this self-inflicted crisis.

Both parties agreed to the sequester. The time for finger pointing and assigning blame is over.

We should immediately vote on and pass common sense measures, like stopping Medicare fraud, ending subsidies for oil and gas industries and ending tax loop holes for large corporations.

I ask unanimous consent to bring up H.R. 699, a balanced bill to replace the sequester with spending cuts and revenues. A measure that would save thousands of jobs.

Thank you Mr. Speaker

Maybe Tammy should have sent this letter to Obama also since the sequester was his idea. But, Nooooooo! If she did she would get a call or email from the WH threatening her--like the email Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward received. It's now come to light that the Washington Times' media credentials for WH access were threatened due to columns by Lanny Davis (a former Clinton aide) published in the Times.

Dave, you are aware that President Obama has been negotiating with GOP leadership in an effort to reshape the sequester, aren't you?
Many people are under the impression that Obama has not dealt with the GOP, but has simply been out 'campaigning' and using people as props to play politics with this serious issue. The fact of the matter is that the President DID finally meet with the Republicans yesterday. For 7 minutes. Nobody can say that he didn't meet with the GOP directly to solve the problem.

Abigail, hasn't the whole Bob Woodward thing been instructive on how the liberal media operates?
Woodward has been a liberal icon for decades. He has been THE guy that demonstrated investigative journalism and journalistic integrity. Now that he has been critical of Obama, the entire lot of them have disowned him... called him senile, etc. They cannot tolerate a difference of opinion. Instead of stepping back and saying "well, Woodward wrote this so there's probably something to it." , they say "Woodward is senile. Woodward is a sellout. Woodward is an attention whore". File this away as just another example of how intellectually dishonest the liberal media is.

She and many other democrats (including the occupants of the White House) seem to be acting like Veruca Salt...

Amen! And to think The Orchard Evangelical Free Church wants to raze 8 neighborhood homes to buildRead More a parking lot? Another loss of revenue for the village if these 8 homes get demolished.

yes, despite the fact that property values have taken a hit in this economy, there has been NORead More change in the AH property taxes> Question: what are our political representatives doing about this?

The residents of Arlington Heights are aging and have no money we cannot raise any more taxes. IfRead More anything cut the size of the force

I think that the police department does need a building. New national standards require separateRead More ventilation systems for prisoners to reduce unhealthy exposure. Also, new standards require "hardened" facilities to assure uninterrupted protection during emergencies. In addition, there are many more issues that after review seem reasonable. However, we don't need a new 71,000 square foot building which would rival in size, our current village hall - a building many call a Taj Mahal. The current process started on the wrong foot and wasted money. Three qualified consultants submitted bids and yet the contract was awarded to high-bidder. This has already wasted thousands of taxpayer dollars. Hopefully the new Board and Mayor will rein in the excessive spending and design. We have reason for hope. There is now a qualified and fiscally conservative architect on the Board. At the same time, it would nice to see if the Police could share some of the largely unused village hall. Doing so, would be a win-win for taxpayers.

ask the Police who work there , what is more important their pensions being funded , or someRead More """ air quality bs "" I would give a shower with a garden hose to any law braker anytime , some deodorant , hell I would even wash their cloth , meanwhile giving them nice pink pants and t-shirt the current police station is sufficient , but there must be a interest in building one and it is not a residents interest I am talking about - figure it out ( $$$$$$$)
