Local Man Part of College Baseball Team That Won National Championship

Scott Plaza, a senior business education major from Arlington Heights, helped the 2014 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team win the NCAA World Series and capture the second Division III national championship in program history.

The Warhawks, 44-7, participated in the series May 23-27 near Appleton, Wis.

The Warhawks won their first game against the University of Southern Maine 8-1. The team went on to defeat SUNY Cortland 9-6 and the University of St. Thomas 10-4, sending them to the final game of the series.

In that game, the Warhawks shut out Emory University 7-0 to seize the national championship.

The baseball team joins five other national championship teams hailing from UW-Whitewater this academic year. The football, men's basketball, men's and women's wheelchair basketball and gymnastic teams also won the top prize at the end of their seasons.

For the first time in the history of collegiate athletics, UW-Whitewater completed a three-sport sweep by winning football, basketball and baseball national championships in the same academic year.
