Residents Encouraged to Attend District 211 Tax Levy Meeting

The district will consider its tax levy at the meeting, which will determine how much residents pay in taxes to the district next year.

A local man is encouraging fellow taxpayers in District 211 to attend a school board meeting this week that could impact how much they pay in taxes.

The board will meet Thursday to discuss its 2013 tax levy.

In high school District 211, property taxes make up approximately 86 percent of the district’s budget.

District officials are suggesting the levy be set at $2.12 million, an increase of $2.5 million over last year, or 1.2 percent over the 2012 total levy extension, a report by Superintendent Nancy Robb shows.

District officials say even once they set their levy, it is hard to know whether an individual’s tax bill will go up or down, and by how much given all of the other factors that come in to play, such as EAV.

Resident John Parker is hoping that the district will keep its levy flat instead of increasing it. He wants to ensure residents attend the meeting to keep the board in check as it decides where to set the levy.

“Your attendance is requested at this Thursday’s D-211 school board meeting,” he said. “We need to bring the view of the community to the D-211 school board by asking them to control spending,” Parker said.

He has been sending out email after email, and making call after call, hoping residents will show up for the meeting and call for no increases in the levy.

“I don’t know many are going to show up. A lot said they would. This is just about the average person, me, getting involved and trying to be proactive,” Parker said.

The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Anne Koller Board of Education Meeting Room at the district officer’s, 1750 S. Roselle Road, Palatine.

The board will meet again on November 1 to determine the amount of its proposed levy. There will be a public hearing on that levy proposal on December 12 at 7:30 p.m.
