Hersey High School Named Among Most Challenging in State

John Hersey High School was named the seventh most challenging high school in Illinois in recently released rankings from the Washington Post.

Nearby, Fremd High School has been named the 20th most challenging high school while Palatine High School also made the list at No. 40Prospect High School was ranked No. 9 on the list and Buffalo Grove was ranked as the 12th most challenging high school in the state.

In Illinois only 65 high schools of the 682 public high schools and 146 non-public high schools in the state were named to the Washington Post’s list

College Prep School of America in Lombard was ranked as the most challenging high school in Illinois.

The Washington Post list ranks schools through an index formula that uses the following ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June of that year.

In releasing the list, the Washington Post also notes the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence.
