Page Easily Defeats GOP Challenge

Electoral board's decision provides voters with clear choice in 2012.

The Cook County Board of Elections threw out a challenge to David Page’s candidacy at a hearing, ensuring voters in November will have a clear alternative to trial lawyer and career politician Matt Murphy. The ruling means that Murphy, a Tea Party-backed conservative masquerading as a moderate, will have to answer to his constituents for supporting massive cuts to education, senior services, and health care; restricting women’s rights; and voting to strip workers of legal protections.

“With this frivolous challenge behind us, we can now look forward to November as we work to deliver effective and responsible representation for the 27th District in Springfield,” Page said. “With Illinois’ fiscal health currently 50th among the states, we cannot afford to wait any longer for our elected officials to enact meaningful measures to get the state back on track.”

Due to the absence of a Democratic candidate on the ballot in the March primary, the Democratic Committee chairmen were able to select a candidate for the General Election. They selected Page due to his financial expertise, noting that there are no financial advisors in the General Assembly.

After being slated, Page and dozens of volunteers circulated nominating petitions and collected more than 1500 signatures from voters in order to appear on the ballot in November. This result was well over the 1000 signatures required by the State Board of Elections.

The electoral board ruled that Page’s candidacy is indeed valid. State records reveal that Ryan Cudney, executive director of the Republican State Senate Campaign Committee, originally requested the copies of Page’s nominating paperwork.

Afraid their candidate would have to defend his record of inaction in Springfield, the GOP sought to prevent a contested election by using Tea Party member Beatrice Sutton to file an objection to Page’s candidacy. With today’s result, the voters of the 27th District will be able to have their voices heard at the polls on November 6th.
