Arlington Heights Police: Scam Alert, Residential Burglary, Damage to Property

Police issue crime alerts about several incidents throughout the village.

Note: The following information was obtained from Arlington Heights Police Department via Citizen Observer.

An elderly resident reported a scam involving someone who contacted her asking for money for a relative, police said. The scam, known as the Grandparent Scam, is ranked one of the top 10 most common by the National Council on Aging

The 89-year-old resident received a call from someone identifying himself as “Rob” who claimed to be working for the Red Cross in Haiti. She asked the caller if he was her great-nephew whose name is Robert. The caller said he was Robert.

He then said he needed $1,500 to get out of jail on a speeding ticket, police said. The caller passed the phone onto an official with the embassy who asked her to wire $2,500 to an address, police said.

When the resident questioned why the amount increased, the second caller said Rob would go to jail if she didn’t send the money, according to reports.

She contacted Western Union and attempted to wire the cash but employees there explained she was being scammed, police said. She contacted her great-nephew who confirmed he was not in Haiti and had no called her.

The resident filed a report on April 17.

Truck stolen

Someone stole a white 1999 Chevy 3500 HD truck from a business parking lot at 605 E. Algonquin Road on April 3 or 4, police said. The truck was reported stolen on April 18. The truck is valued at $2,000 and the owner had the keys as well as permission to park the truck in the lot.

Residential burglary

Police said someone used an object to shatter a rear glass patio door in the 1200 block of S. Haddow on April 16. The blinds between the double panes were found inside on a couch. Nothing appeared to be missing or out of place. The damaged door is valued at $7,000.

The victim and family went to dinner at Flaming Grill & Buffet in Rolling Meadows. When they went to leave they discovered two flat tires on their 2006 Chrysler Town & Country van. The tires did not appeared to have been damaged and it is unknown if this incident is related to the Residential Burglary.
