Arlington Heights Police Press Release on Barricade Incident Saturday

The Arlington Heights Police Department issued a press release late Saturday night detailing the incident that occurred at 151 W. Wing Street.

Below is a press release from the Arlington Heights Police Department issued on Saturday, May 4 at 11:01 p.m.

At approximately 5:20 P.M on Saturday May 4, 2013 the Arlington Heights Police Department received a report of several gun shots inside the condominiums located at 1 N. Chestnut on the 6th floor.  Police Officers immediately responded to the building and began to make their way up the stairwells to deal with the threat.  Once they had reached the 5th floor of the building and realizing that they were already on the top floor they received notification that the correct location was 151 W. Wing St. on the 6th floor. Several other responding units also heard gunshots.

Information was received that a woman was inside the unit on the 6th floor, who was reportedly with her son. The son was despondent and threatening to take his life.  The woman called 911 and said her son had a gun in his possession and fired several shots inside the unit.  The woman was able to disarm the son, who handed the weapon to his mother, but he removed the gun magazine prior to relinquishing the weapon.  The woman was able to flee the condominium and was taken into protective custody by officers, while her son remained inside the unit.

Due to the fact that it was unknown if the suspect had additional weapons inside the residence and he refused to exit the dwelling, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) was activated.  An exterior perimeter of the downtown area was immediately established and secured by A.H.P.D. and numerous other agencies that were sent to assist in perimeter control.

Upon the arrival of NIPAS, a coordinated effort was initiated by AHPD Supervisors and NIPAS Staff to safely remove the suspect from his unit.  After numerous attempts to have the suspect exit without a response, entry was forced and the subject was taken into custody uninjured.

He was transported to NWCH for an evaluation.  The Arlington Heights Police Department Criminal Investigation unit will conduct a complete follow-up, with assistance from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, to determine weather any charges will be filed.  The suspect is a 38 year old male who resided the unit.

Release issued by Arlington Heights Police Captain Kenneth Galinski.
