Arlington Heights Police Issue Email Scam Alert

Latest scam involves an email received by a resident from a friend whose account had been compromised, where the sender asked for $1,650.

Arlington Heights Police have issued a scam alert relating to a resident receiving an email from a friend’s compromised email account, where the sender requested money.

The resident reportedly received an email stating their friend was in Manila Philippines and was attacked by robbers who took all of their money, police say.

The sender said cash, cell phones and credit cards had been taken and asked the resident to send $1,650 to help the family get home.

Suspecting it was a scam, the resident contacted the friend, and then police.

Arlington Heights police remind residents to always contact friends or family before taking any action on money requests through email.

The email had poor grammar and spelling, something else police say residents should look for in these types of requests. 

Anyone having information about this or any other serious crime in Arlington Heights should submit an anonymous text tip by texting the keyword 847AHPD and your message to 847411(tip411) or call Arlington Heights Crime Stoppers at (847) 590-STOP. Callers are guaranteed anonymity and may qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
