Arlington Heights Police Blotter: Traveling Patio Umbrella, Serial Bike Thief and More

Criminal Damage to Property

A landscaped brick patio was damaged by unknown offenders in the 1600 block of E. Burning Tree Ct. sometime between July 26 at 11:59 p.m. and July 27 at 7:05 a.m. The offenders knocked off three of the top finished bricks that were glued in place, knocked over plants on home’s patio, placed a lawn sprinkler on the victim’s 2006 Pontiac Torrent which chipped the windshield and relocated the patio umbrella to the baseball diamond at Centennial Park.

  • A resident living in the 1400 block of Eton Ct. woke up to noises in Centennial Park where his home backs up to at 4 a.m. on July 27. The victim saw to unknown male juveniles, who appeared to be trying to open up the shed in his back yard. He yelled at the boys and they fled. Damage estimates were not immediately available. Furniture on the patio had been moved around and damage was also observed on a neighbor’s fence in the 1500 block of Eton Ct.
  • That neighbor also called police and reported the damage. Wooden verticals on the fence also were broken out. The damages were estimated at $200.
  • Police were then dispatched to a home in the 1700 block of Burning Tree Ct. and observed two branches broken off of a small tree in the front years. Damage estimates were not immediately available, but the resident believes the tree will have to be replaced.
  • The offenders were described as high school-aged males, wearing dark clothing. One offender was described as six feet tall and thin, wearing a winter hat with flaps. The second suspect was described as standing five foot seven with a thin build.

Vehicle Burglary

The glove compartment contents from a 2002 Chevy Cavalier were taken as it was parked in the 300 block of N. Salem Ave. apartment parking lot on June 26, but the victim did not report the incident at that time. Taken was the vehicle registration, receipts, miscellaneous papers and a Ravinia chair. The victim reported the incident on July 25, at 10 a.m. believing the two incidents were related, after an unknown person contacted Dish Network to obtain service and used her personal information.  No financial losses were reported and the service agreement was not fulfilled.

Theft

A black Motorola Photon Smart Phone ($499) was taken from Savers, 780 W. Dundee Rd. on July 27 between 12:05 p.m. and 12:15 p.m. The victim set the phone down on a table to look at some items, walked away and when she returned ten minutes later, the phone was gone. When she called the phone, a male answered and then hung up.

Criminal Damage to property

Officers patrolling the parking lot in Arlington Town Square, 35 S. Evergreen Ave. noticed damage to the south elevator stairwell inside door. The damage is believed to have been made sometime between July 26 at 7 a.m. and July 27 at 7 a.m. Apparently, someone attempted to forcibly remove the door handle and the stainless steel backing. Two top screws also were removed in addition to the back plate. Public works was called the handle the exposed sharp edges, and no damage estimate was immediately available.  

Criminal Damage to Vehicle

A blue 2013 Chevy Sonic parked in a driveway in the 200 block of E. Hackberry Dr. keyed on the rear driver’s side door and quarter panel sometime between July 27 at 10p.m. and July 28 at 7:20 a.m. Damage estimates were not immediately available.

Burglary

Two Cannondale R700 road bikes were taken from an apartment storage locker in the Hancock Square apartments, 299 N. Dunton Ave., sometime between July 20 at 9 a.m. and July 27 at 9 a.m. The area where the bikes were taken was a common storage area in the apartment building. The bikes, one red and one blue, both were reportedly locked to a bicycle rack and each were valued at $1,800. Access is only available with a resident key.  

A woman’s Trek 7.3 model ($800) which was locked in the common storage area at the Hancock Square apartments, 299 N. Dunton Ave. was taken sometime between July 27 at 3 p.m. and July 28 at 5:30 p.m. Officers observed two points of entry to the storage area and observed pry marks on one of the doors near the strike plate.

A blue men’s 17-inch Diamondback Insight One road bike ($800) was taken from the common storage area at the Hancock Square apartments, 299 N. Dunton Ave. sometime between July 19 at 6 p.m. and July 28 at 1 p.m. The bicycle was reportedly chained up in the storage room.
