Arlington Heights Police Blotter: Laundry Machine Bandit, 39 Bags of Ice-A-Way Stolen and More

Theft

An unknown offender stole a black Cannondale mountain bike at the Goodwill Store, 1551 N. Dryden Ave. on Jan. 24 between 6:45 p.m. and 7:07 p.m. The victim arrived at the store and put his bike up against a wall outside the building and went in to shop. The offender, described as a white male wearing a dark hat, what appeared to be a Carhart jumpsuit and a black backpack approached the bike, got on it and rode away. The mountain bike is valued at $900.

An unknown offender stole a Jessica Simpson wallet from a woman as she sat and ate at Portillo’s, 806 W. Dundee Rd. on Jan. 25 at noon. The victim said she hung the purse on the back of her chair, where the wallet was exposed. She discovered it missing, and shortly afterward her bank called and said they had suspended use of a credit card due to an attempted over-limit purchase at an undisclosed Walmart store. Inside the wallet were two California driver’s licenses, a social security card and a sim card adaptor for a cell phone. The wallet was valued at $75.

An unknown offender stole a white, three-quarter pea coat from a medical office, 121 S. Wilke Rd. on Jan. 26 between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The victim, who works in the medical office, left her coat draped over a chair in the lab area. In the pocket was a $50 bill, and a set of three keys. The keys were valued at $10.

Burglary

A property manager for an apartment complex located in the 500 block of S. Cleveland Ave. discovered 39 bags of Ice-A-Way. The bags were taken sometime between Jan. 11 at noon and Jan. 25 at 9 p.m. They were stored in the bathroom area of the maintenance building adjacent to the pool and no signs of forced entry were discovered. The loss is estimated at $330.

Retail Theft Arrest

Michael A. Termini, 28, of the 3800 block of Old McHenry, Long Grove, was arrested on Jan. 25 at 10:45 p.m. at Target, 1700 E. Rand Rd., after taking a black HP Paviliion notebook computer. Termini was seen picking up the notebook off of a display and walking around the store, and then placed it in a black case he had over his shoulder. When he tried to leave the store without paying, he was stopped by loss prevention. Police arrived and searched him and discovered half of an orange colored pill believed to be a controlled substance, in addition to a spoon, small piece of tin foil and a hypodermic syringe. Termini was charged with felony retail theft, felony possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. A court date is set for March 14.

Burglary Arrest

Hugo Ramirez, 19, of the 500 W. Dempster St., Mount Prospect was arrested for burglary on Jan. 24 after breaking into a coin operated laundry machine and storage lockers at Briar Trace Condominiums, located in the 1100 block of E. Algonquin Rd. Police received a call about a burglary in progress, and when they arrived, found Ramirez in front of the laundry machines, in possession of a red-handled screwdriver and the coin box of the laundry machine pried upward. Cables that secured the storage lockers also were found cut. A resident said her belongings were rifled through, but nothing was taken. Ramirez was charge with a felony charge of burglary and felony possession of burglary tools. A court date is set for Feb. 27

Felony DUI

Dennis R. Smith, 32, of the 200 block of Uteg St., Crystal Lake, was arrested for felony DUI on Jan. 26 at 4 a.m. in the 300 block of E. Rand Rd. Smith was driving a black 2007 Chevy Trailblazer as he was headed southeast on Rand Rd. from Kennicott, when police observed his tires cross over the center line on several occasions. When he was stopped, a smell of alcohol was observed on his breath. Smith was charged with DUI, aggravated DUI because his license was suspended for DUI, and having no insurance, which also is a felony. A court date is set for March 14.
