Arlington Heights Blotter: $500 in Nicotine Gum and Patches Stolen, Speed Trailer Spray Painted

Criminal Damage to Vehicle

A woman came back to her car, which was in the Arlington Park Metra station parking lot, 2121 W. Northwest Hwy. on May 9 to find the driver’s side fender, front door and back door scratched with what police believe was a metal object. The damage occurred sometime between 7:50 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. Damage estimates were not immediately available.

An Arlington Heights Police Department speed trailer was spray painted with black paint at the intersection of W. Sigwalt and S. Fernandez Ave. some time between May 10 and May 12. As a result, the photographic eye that determines the speed of vehicles passing by, is now inoperable. Damage estimates were not immediately available.

Theft

A theft of two cell phones and a camera occurred at St. Viator High School on May 10, sometime between 10:30 p.m. and 11:03 p.m. One of the cell phones and the camera were ultimately recovered. An event was occurring inside the high school practice gym at the time of the incident; when the items were discovered missing, a search turned up the camera, which was found in a tool bin. One of the missing phones was discovered in the men’s bathroom garbage. A white iPhone 4S, valued at $400 is still missing.

A woman’s iPhone 5, valued at $700 was taken at Ross Dress for Less, 370 E. Rand Rd. on May 11 between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The phone was protruding from the side pocket of the victim’s purse, and was in plain sight. It was taken while the victim was shopping.

Vehicle Burglary

A blue 2007 Suburu was burglarized at Northwest Auto Wash, 900 W. Euclid Ave. on May 12 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. An employee of the business parked the car in the employee lot, and left it unlocked. Taken was a black purse ($20), black wallet ($20), a $5 scratch off winning instant lottery ticket, credit and debit cards and a gold ring with purple stones and two small diamonds.

 Retail Theft

A man stole Nicodern gum and patches, and whitening strips valued at a total of $874 from Jewel-Osco, 1860 S. Arlington Heights Rd., on May 7 at 10:47 p.m. After the theft, store employees reviewing surveillance footage and saw the bald, white subject approximately 50 years of age put 10 boxes of Nicodern gum and patches ($500), and eight boxes of whitening strips ($350) into a cart. He was then seen leaving the store with two blue cooler bags ($24) and the gum, patches and whitening strips were not able to be located in the store.

Aggravated Arson

A fire was started and quickly extinguished in an apartment building common area, in the 2100 block of S. Goebbert Rd. on May 12 at 5:30 p.m. Police responded to reports of a fire at 5:30 p.m., and by the time they arrived minutes later, a resident had used a fire extinguisher to put it out. Witnesses reported seeing four male juveniles playing with a tennis ball that was on fire 15 minutes before the fire was observed. The fire caused damage to a stairway door and carpet. Damage estimates were not immediately available.

Driving Under the Influence

Alexander D. Carlino, 21, of the 600 block of Carter St., Libertyville, was arrested for DUI at 370 E. Rand Rd. on May 12 at 3:17 a.m. Officers responded to a report of a single vehicle accident where the driver struck a median, and was stuck in the landscaping entrance to Northpoint Shopping Center. When police arrived, Carlino’s head was slumped down, his cell phone was in his lap and he had to be helped out of the vehicle by the officer. Police say there was an odor of alcohol on Carlino’s breath, and he was additionally charged with improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and illegal transportation of alcohol.  His court date is scheduled for June 4.

Dorothy Agata Dziura, 27, of the 900 block of N. Wheeling Rd., Mt. Prospect was arrested for DUI at S. Arlington Heights Rd. at George St. on May 12 at 3:22 a.m. Dziura was observed driving over lane lines by an officer responding to another call. The office made a traffic stop, and detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath. An open bottle of Gran Marnier liquor was found behind the driver’s seat in plain view. Dziura was additionally charged with illegal transportation of liquor and improper traffic lane usage. Her court date is scheduled for June 14.
