Arlington Heights Explosion Caused by Ignited Shaving Cream Can

The Arlington Heights fire and police departments responded to an explosion in a parking garage at 155 E. Eastman St. Tuesday where a homeless woman's belongings had been set on fire.

An explosion in an Arlington Heights parking garage at 155 E. Eastman Tuesday was reportedly started by an unknown offender who set fire to a homeless woman’s belongings.

According to police, the woman’s luggage, which contained a number of items, including toiletries, clothing and aerosol cans, exploded around 7 p.m. Officials believe the explosion occurred after a shaving cream can inside the luggage was ignited.  

The luggage was locked to the woman’s white Sears 21-speed bicycle which was chained to a garage support cable in the garage, police said.

Two cars parked near the scene were covered with flame retardant material and a smoke film as a result of firefighters extinguishing the fire.  

The bike was valued at $200 and the luggage and its contents at $100. It is unknown if there was any damage caused to the vehicles.
