Arlington Heights Blotter: Affectionate Graffiti Artist, Arlington Racetrack Battery

Criminal Defacement of Property/Graffiti

The vertical reflector of a stop sign at the intersection of Tamarack Dr. and E. Falcon Dr. was spray-painted with the words, “Love is Love” sometime between Aug. 2 at noon at Aug. 3 at 2:02 p.m. Damage estimates were not immediately available.

Gang graffiti was discovered in the 1100 block of E. Algonquin Rd. near the Briar Trace condominiums parking lot on Aug. 2 at 9 p.m. The graffiti was found in the southwest corner of the parking lot on a wooden fence, and damage estimates were not immediately available.

Theft

A black Trek 7-speed hybrid’s men’s bicycle ($300) was taken from a common area bicycle storage room at the Hancock apartments, 200 N. Arlington Heights Rd. sometime between July 3 and Aug. 3. After being notified by apartment management that bicycles had been stolen from the storage area, the victim went to check and discovered his bicycle was taken as well.

A woman’s teal green purse was taken from Barnes and Noble, 13 W. Rand Rd. on Aug. 3 between 2:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. The woman was reading a book in a chair and left her purse on the floor near the chair. When she got up to check out, she used the debit card in her pocket then proceeded to go to a store nearby. She then realized she didn’t have her purse, and when she returned to the bookstore, it was gone. The purse contained a driver’s license, $5 in cash, two credit cards and a checkbook.

Battery

Richard J. Burrell, 29, of the 4900 block of W. Strong St., Chicago was arrested for misdemeanor battery at Arlington Park Racetrack, 2200 W. Euclid Ave. on Aug. 4 at 5:25 p.m. Security officers responded to a call about an intoxicated man who was drinking beer and yelling at another man at the main gate. Burrell was asked to leave by security guards, but refused. The security guards told him the track was closed, and again asked him to leave. Instead, Burrell kicked a guard in the knee and knocked him to the ground. Police officers who had arrived on the scene put him in handcuffs and in the back of a squad car, where he was able to move the handcuffs to the front of his body. He sustained a cut to his right eyebrow and a scrape to his right elbow, and was then transported to Northwest Community Hospital. He proceeded to yell and scream at doctors and nurses and ultimately had to be restrained to subdue him by hospital employees.

Aggravated Driving Under the Influence

Luis A. Sanchez, 29, of the 1300 block of Brown St., Des Plaines was arrested for aggravated DUI and other charges at 200 E. Algonquin Rd. on Aug. 2 at 1:05 a.m. An Arlington Heights police officer observed initial violations committed by Sanchez at Algonquin and Arlington Heights roads. When Sanchez turned southbound on Tonne from Algonquin Rd., he pulled his car over to the curb and exited the vehicle. The officer followed, and inquired why he was stopped. Sanchez told the officer he had to urinate. After running his name, the officer learned Sanchez’s license was revoked for DUI. He was charged with DUI, felony DUI, improper traffic lane usage, operating an uninsured motor vehicle an aggravated DUI while driving on a revoked license. Sanchez has an Aug. 26 court date.
