USMC Veteran Derek Porter to Speak on PTSD

  • This free event takes place Tuesday, September 10, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Arlington Heights Memorial Library (500 N. Dunton Ave. Arlington Heights, IL 60004) in the Hendrickson Room. All are welcome to attend, RSVP as a courtesy but not a requirement. 
  • Author of the new book Conquering Mental Fatigues: PTSD & Hypervigilance disorder- POST WAR, Derek will be speaking on combat induced post-traumatic stress and hypervigilance disorder. 
  • The former United States Marine and Iraq war veteran served with 2nd Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team (FAST) Company and was awarded the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat distinguishing device for bravery under fire. 
  • Derek is co-founder and COO of the War Writers' Campaign, a nonprofit that provides a forum for assisting veterans to write and publish their stories under the principle of "the power of therapy through communication."
  • Event sponsors include NAMI Barrington, Lake McHenry Veterans and Family Services, Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the War Writers' Campaign.
