Palatine Target Store Gets OK to Sell Beer, Wine

The Palatine village council on Monday approved a liquor license application for the Target store at 679 E. Dundee Road.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: The Target store at 679 E. Dundee Road in Palatine is set to begin selling alcohol for the first time after its liquor license application was approved by the Palatine village council Monday night.

The type of liquor license that Target was granted was first issued to the nearby Walmart store at 1555 N. Rand Road in December 2012.

Jonathon Edwards, the store manager of the Target, was present at the meeting and told the Daily Herald that the fact that Walmart had a liquor license and Target didn't was a factor in the decision to apply for a license.

"The decision was made to try to offer the best selection to our customers," Edwards said.

The Palatine liquor commission is considering an application from Target to sell alcohol at its 679 E. Dundee Road store. 

Target's liquor license application is one of several items on the agenda for Monday night's village council meeting. 

The big box store is applying for a Class B-2 liquor license, a category that the village created in December 2012 in order to allow Wal-Mart to sell alcoholic beverages. 

It allows liquor sales at general merchandises and requires there be 50,000 square feet of floor space, in which a maximum of 5 percent is used for alcoholic beverage displays. Other stipulations are that sales can only include beer and wine, and the store has a pharmacy license.
