Think Pink: Breast Cancer Awareness Events in the Area

From galas to walks to shopping, here's how you can participate, pledge support and donate to the cause.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and whether you love to shop, attend events, walk or run, there are tons of different ways to support the cause.

Park Ridge paints the town pink Friday, October 5 for Pink Day in honor of the movement to fight breast cancer. The Pink Taxi Organization is asking businesses, neighbors and community leaders to join in on the pink party. Pink Taxi will donate a portion of the day’s proceeds, from all taxi rides, to the American Cancer Society. For more information, check out this link.

The American Cancer Society’s Hoffman Estates 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will be October 14. Or, participate in the North Shore Making Strides event with Westfield’s Project Pink on October 21 at the Westfield Shoppingtown Old Orchard in Skokie. Nationwide more than eight million people have walked for this cause and raised $460 million. You can still sign up or donate to either event by clicking here.

Join in the “Pink Party with a Purpose” October 17 at the Lamplighter Inn Tavern and Grill in Palatine. The Dynamic Professional Women’s Network of Palatine is hosting the event which will offer educational information about area cancer resources as well as networking, pink hair extensions and door prizes. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to Wellness Place, a community-based cancer education, counseling and support resource center in Palatine.

There are additional ways to spread breast cancer awareness this month by supporting national organizations that are fighting for a cure.

Research centers like Susan G. Komen for the Cure are selling pink ribbon merchandise and it’s a twofer — retail therapy and donating to a cause that affects millions.

You can also support breast cancer research by affixing a special stamp to your mail. The U.S. Postal Service has been selling a stamp commemorating breast cancer awareness for the past 15 years. The agency has raised $75 million so far for research programs at the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

And you can join people from four continents in a Race for the Cure event organized by Susan G. Komen For The Cure, or an Avon Walk For Breast Cancer event organized by the Avon Foundation for Women.

TELL US: Is there a special event you participate in to support breast cancer research? Share your stories and thoughts with us by adding them to the comments sections of this article. Also, be sure to add photos of you and your friends supporting the cause to the photo gallery above.

Breast cancer has a very human cost. My lady friends' daughter, Kim, was diagnosed with a very aggressive breast cancer and has begun a course of chemotherapy prior to surgery and radiation. Chemo compromises your immune system and make you vulnerable to infections, so Kim will have to take a leave of absence from work during her treatment.
But, with a house, a daughter in college and two small daughters, the bills go on. There will be a benefit for her at Brewbakers' pub at 103rd and South Western Ave. on Sunday, Oct 28, 2012 from Noon to 6:00PM. featuring multiple D.J's; live bands; food; drink and a raffle which includes a new Ice Bear 250cc trike. Amen! And to think The Orchard Evangelical Free Church wants to raze 8 neighborhood homes to buildRead More a parking lot? Another loss of revenue for the village if these 8 homes get demolished.

The residents of Arlington Heights are aging and have no money we cannot raise any more taxes. IfRead More anything cut the size of the force

I think that the police department does need a building. New national standards require separateRead More ventilation systems for prisoners to reduce unhealthy exposure. Also, new standards require "hardened" facilities to assure uninterrupted protection during emergencies. In addition, there are many more issues that after review seem reasonable. However, we don't need a new 71,000 square foot building which would rival in size, our current village hall - a building many call a Taj Mahal. The current process started on the wrong foot and wasted money. Three qualified consultants submitted bids and yet the contract was awarded to high-bidder. This has already wasted thousands of taxpayer dollars. Hopefully the new Board and Mayor will rein in the excessive spending and design. We have reason for hope. There is now a qualified and fiscally conservative architect on the Board. At the same time, it would nice to see if the Police could share some of the largely unused village hall. Doing so, would be a win-win for taxpayers.

ask the Police who work there , what is more important their pensions being funded , or someRead More """ air quality bs "" I would give a shower with a garden hose to any law braker anytime , some deodorant , hell I would even wash their cloth , meanwhile giving them nice pink pants and t-shirt the current police station is sufficient , but there must be a interest in building one and it is not a residents interest I am talking about - figure it out ( $$$$$$$)
