Lake Arlington: Park District Begins Awareness Campaign for Safety Changes

The Arlington Heights Park District has begun their Share the Path Interim Action Plan to educate users on how to maximize safety at Lake Arlington.

Beginning Thursday, August 1, the Arlington Heights Park District (AHPD) began implementing education efforts - especially for pedestrians and bicyclists - to share the pathway at Lake Arlington, 1400 E. Valley Ln., Arlington Heights, according to a press release from the AHPD.

The campaign is being dubbed the Share the Path Interim Action Plan

Park district staff began patrolling the path Thursday, and will continue to have a presence there Monday through Sunday during the hours of 9 a.m. until 7 p.m., the release states.

Interim Safety Changes, according to the release.

  • Bicycle and wheeled users now will be required to use the outside lane of the path, and travel in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • The inside lane of the path is devoted to pedestrians, runners, strollers and wheel chairs and those users are required to travel in a clockwise direction.
The Arlington Heights Park District stresses that any individual on a bicycle, whether an adult or child, needs to be aware of safe riding techniques and abide by the 8 mph speed limit posted along the pathway.

In regards to sharing the path with pedestrians, bikers are advised to be aware of pedestrian rights and provide enough room for them when passing on a bicycle.

Information on the changes will be available at the National Night Out event on August 6 at North School Park, 401 N. Arlington Heights Road, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

The park district will continue to accept feedback on the interim changes, which will be accepted at the Lake Arlington Boathouse at Lake Arlington or through the website via a form

The changes have resulted from a fatal accident that occurred between an elderly Arlington Heights woman walking the path who was hit from behind by a young person on a bicycle. The incident occurred on July 18, 2013.
