Truck Stolen After Test Drive
Car thieves swap keys during test drive; return hours later to steal truck from Arlington Heights car dealership, police said.
Valued at $22,000, two men swapped keys and stole a truck from the Sullivan Buick GMC dealership after a test drive.
According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, the offenders pretended to be interested in a silver 2005 Dodge Ram SRT10 truck they found advertised online.
After a quick test drive, one of the men went into the dealership at 777 W. Dundee Road to talk price with the salesman. --Little did he know, the two men had no intention of buying the truck, the two men were there to steal it.
As the salesman tried wheel and deal a sale inside, the other offender remained in the truck to make the key swap.
With the key still in the ignition, one of the men stayed inside the truck to check the vehicle’s interior after the test drive, while the other offender distracted the salesman with numbers and negotiations.
When the offender and salesman went back outside the other offender returned the key and the two men eventually left the dealership.
--The next morning the truck was no longer parked at dealership lot, driven right off the lot at 777 W. Dundee Road.
A check of the key revealed the offenders kept the original key and gave the salesman a copy, which was not electronically coded to the truck. Police believe the offenders had a hand-held key copy device to make the stealthily switch and steal the truck.
According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, the truck was stolen, driven right off the lot, sometime between 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 and 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9.
About 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighing roughly 185 pounds, the first offender is described as a white male between 25 to 35 years of age with short black hair and a mustache.
The second offender, also a white male, stands about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs around 170 pounds. With a slight European accent, he is described as clean-shaven with short, sandy colored hair.
